A PCR (polymerase chain reaction) test is a highly accurate laboratory test that detects the genetic material of the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19. A sample is taken using a simple nose and/or throat swab and sent to an accredited laboratory for analysis. PCR testing is widely recognised and is often the test required for international travel.
