Ear wax (cerumen) is produced naturally by glands in the outer ear canal and plays an important role in ear health, protecting against dirt, debris and bacteria. The ears are usually self-cleaning, so most of the time there's no need to remove wax, but problems can arise when too much builds up.
Microsuction is a safe and gentle way to remove excess ear wax. Using a small suction device and a microscope, our trained clinician clears the wax without the need for water, which many people find more comfortable than traditional syringing.

Suitable for adults experiencing blocked ears, reduced hearing, discomfort or wax build-up. Our clinician will examine your ears first to confirm microsuction is appropriate.
A build-up of ear wax can cause:
Wax can build up more easily with age, with narrow or hairy ear canals, or with regular use of hearing aids or earphones.

Choose a time online or by calling the pharmacy. Using olive oil drops for a few days beforehand can help soften the wax.
Examination
We'll examine your ears to check the wax and rule out anything that needs onward referral.
Gentle removal
The wax is removed using microsuction, and we'll give you aftercare advice.
Your ears may feel a little sensitive afterwards. Avoid inserting cotton buds and keep water out of the ears for a short while if advised. Contact us if you have ongoing pain or discharge.
Ear microsuction uses a gentle vacuum to leave the ear dry and free of wax. The result is usually better hearing and cleaner ears.
In general the procedure isn't painful, although it can be a little noisy. The skin inside the ear canal is sensitive, so it's important to stay still when asked.
Because the procedure is carried out using a microscope, more wax and debris can be reached and removed. It tends to be quicker and more comfortable than other methods, with a noticeable improvement in hearing.
It depends on the individual. Some people choose microsuction every few months, others once a year, to keep their ears clear.
