A sore throat is very common and is usually caused by a viral infection. Symptoms can include a painful throat, especially when swallowing, a dry scratchy throat, and swollen glands in the neck. Most sore throats improve within a week. Our pharmacist can assess your symptoms and recommend the most appropriate treatment.

Treatment or advice

Rest, drink plenty of cool fluids and use over-the-counter pain relief if appropriate. Seek urgent advice if you have difficulty breathing or swallowing, or if symptoms get rapidly worse.

The consultation is free on the NHS. Where treatment is supplied, normal NHS prescription charges and exemptions apply.
